Robin, Benjamin and I met this morning for a strings-only run-through of our May program:
Quartet in E♭ Major, K. 493 (1786) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Phantasy for Piano Quartet in F# Minor, H. 94 (1910) Frank Bridge
Quartet in A Minor, Op. 67 (1931) Joachín Turina
It was lovely to be working together again! We have a habit of making remarks to each other as we rehearse, sometimes even singing missing lines. OK, I’m the only one who does that. Still, Benjamin remarked how handy it was that we’re not wind players, and can chat as we play (…start that one upbow? OK…take the 2nd ending for now….). It saves rehearsal time to be able to make decisions that way!
We discussed different possible program orders, but I think we’re going to stick with the order, above. The Bridge ends softly, and I the Turina makes a better concert ender.
We’ll have one more strings-only rehearsal, and then start working with our guest pianist, MyungHee Chung, in April.
In the meantime, after our rehearsal we had a session with photographer Barry Lewis, to get some photos of just the three of us (‘We Three Strings,’ as Benjamin calls us). We’ll use those, with the addition of head shots of our guest performers, while our 1st violinist is on leave.
